Stonehenge, on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, was built in stages between around 3000 BC and 1600 BC. The earliest monument was a circular earthwork enclosure that served as an important burial ground, with the cremated remains of dozens of people discovered there, making it one of Britain’s largest known Neolithic cemeteries. Around 2500 BC, huge sarsen stones from the Marlborough Downs and smaller bluestones from Wales were transported over great distances and erected using remarkable prehistor
