In a highly successful archaeological experiment, researchers led by Carl Lipo and Terry Hunt used ropes to prove that the massive Moai statues could be "walked" upright across Easter Island. By utilizing the statues' D-shaped bases and forward lean, a team of just 18 people was able to move a 4.35-ton replica 100 meters in only 40 minutes using a side-to-side rocking motion, a method supported by local oral traditions and wear marks found on ancient roads.
